Application exiting with 0 on resize (Qt5 + Urho)

VladBolotov

I am integrating Urho3D into Qt. But I am stuck with weird bug. When a window is resizing application can randomly exit with 0 without exceptions, errors and so on. Breakpoints at the end of the main are totally ignored. I made a short video about this problem: https://youtu.be/6d7mBhbmT7U

Can somebody give me an advice how can I debug such thing or how can I figure out where the problem is?

Modanung

Welcome to the forums! :confetti_ball: :slightly_smiling_face:

Are you using xorg video drivers? I’ve had several people tell me they experienced this problem with both Edddy and ManaWarg. @kapil suggested this could be solved using QThreads.

Please do share your implementation if it works.

VladBolotov

Welcome to the forums!
Thank you! :slight_smile:
Are you using xorg video drivers?
I used Windows and MSVC for this. So… Video drivers are from nvidia_drivers.exe. :wink:
... suggested this could be solved usingQThreads.
Sorry, but I did not get what are you trying to say.
Basically I am trying to use SDL_CreateWindowFrom via [Urho3D::EP_EXTERNAL_WINDOW] = reinterpret_cast<void *>(winId()); where winid is a native handler of QWidget. And here is the “dirty” code from the video. https://github.com/VladBolotov/QUrho3D

Modanung

I have no personal experience with QThreads. Maybe its documentation could help understand their use?

VladBolotov

I mean why do I need QThreads here? For what purposes? Think about QThred like it Qt specific std::thread. :slight_smile:

Modanung

Oh, you could use the std variant just as well, I guess.

Elendil

Interesting, I have same problem, but I use WPF instead QT. But problem is only with Urho builded from github, If I remember right, old Urho from 2018 1.7 (from SourceForge) dont have this problem.

Modanung

I’m increasingly baffled by the fact I am not experiencing this problem.

Elendil

Which version Urho you use and from what source you downloaded it? And do you use Urho with external window?

I switch back to old Urho and it working without crash.

Modanung

I basically always use a locally compiled recent version of the official master branch.

Sort of…

QWidget*    fishTrap{ new QWidget() };
engineParameters_[EP_EXTERNAL_WINDOW] = (void*)(fishTrap->winId());
delete      fishTrap;

But it’s not the code that shields me from this issue, as others are experiencing it with the same programs.

I’m on Linux Mint with Xfce using version 430 of the Nvidia drivers, btw.

Elendil

Who knows… for example Urho 1.7.1 source from SourceForge (5.24.2019) doesn’t have included UIComponent class which was added 9months ago, but github version have it.

Maybe github version is always new version but not stable?

weitjong

This is what immediately come to my mind regarding resizing on Windows platform.

I am not saying for sure that is the cause of your issue, but no harm to try to revert that commit to see if it fixes the issue or better yet find the solution to fix if it indeed was the cause. I have no Windows to test any of this.

VladBolotov

I’ve played a little bit with WinDbg and got this stack trace.

Looks like problem inside Qt. I will try to recompile Qt (for now I am using prebuild binaries), hope it will help.

@Elendil
For now I am using Urho 1.7.1 from GithHub release tag. I will try to use older version if recompilation of Qt will not help.

@weitjong
I will give it a try and report here.

VladBolotov

Looks like my problem was solved by switching back from 1.7.1 (2ac4f89) to 1.7 ( 9941b25) from GitHub Release. Updating/Recompiling Qt did not solve my problem.
@weitjong
Reverting the #2256 did not help at all. Looks like there is regression since 1.7.

UPD:
Just created thread on Qt forum: https://forum.qt.io/topic/107442/random-crash-on-window-resize may be Its internal Qt problem.

weitjong

It does not make any sense to me because 1.7.1 is basically a re-release of 1.7 with a very minor change for GCC. It does not explain why 1.7 works but 1.7.1 failed for your Windows problem.

VladBolotov

I don’t know either. I’ve just tested app with 1.7 and 1.7.1 and here is the difference: https://youtu.be/toyjULLPoyk .

If I can help you somehow determine where the problem is just let me know.

weitjong

The release 1.7.1 is a tag from this commit SHA.

It is one commit after the commit 2ac4f89a86bc9f978a8212883ebeb82ba873b53c (which is exactly 1.7).

The only thing I need you to do is to double check how you build the library.

VladBolotov

Oh… Sorry looks like I made mistake and put master branch into 1.7.1 folder. Sorry for this.

How do I build Urho3D for Windows:

  1. Download ZIP file.
  2. Unzip it into D:\libs\urho3Dxxx
  3. Open CMD
  4. cmake . -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Debug -DURHO3D_SAMPLES=Disable
  5. cmake --build . -j4
  6. Add set(ENV{URHO3D_HOME} D:/lib/urho3Dxxx) to my CMakeLists.txt
weitjong

At this point I cannot really trust your past test result. I will really appreciate if you can retest building from master branch after reverting the commit I suspected that causing your QT problem. If you do have time to retest, please ensure you are using out-of-source build tree. Otherwise you may be just seeing things again in your retest.

VladBolotov

So. I am feeling dumb now.

I’ve just clone master branch and revert commit that you mentored. Here is the patch.

This problem appears just now. And was solved by adding setupapi into UrhoCommon.

You might have some build environment problems, if you had to add setupapi to UrhoCommon yourself, since it should be in there already from commit bcd8715. You might try building g completely clean from master, entirely fresh pull, otherwise it appears your results are untrustworthy.

VladBolotov

Stupid me. I’ve just double added setupapi. “setupapi version uuid setupapi”. Problem appears because I’ve used old UrhoCommon inside my CMAKE_MODULE_PATH.

weitjong

Thanks for confirming the revert of the commit fixes your issue. I wonder the crash just manifests itself for Qt external window use case or it also crashes for normal Windows use case (window managed by SDL)?

VladBolotov

For now It’s looks like Qt internal bug for me (https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-64375). I will try to use SDL “native” window on Monday or Tuesday and let you know in this thread. Is it okay?

VladBolotov

I’ve played with samples resizing and could not get it crashed. So, the problem appears only with external Window which is not created by SDL (Qt in my case) and looks like problem is Windows specific. One more thing, I did not saw glitches shown in https://github.com/urho3d/Urho3D/issues/2150.

weitjong

Thanks for your time investigating this.
